No one can negate community’s role in British Development

MANCHESTER: The fifth generation of Pakistani and Kashmiri community is living in Britain, but the role of Pakistani community in uplift of Britain started much more than that, when Britain was ruling Sub-continent. No one can negate the role of Pakistani community in socio economic development of Britain, said Dr Sajad Karim, Member European Parliament and Chairman Friends of Pakistan group.

Pakistani and Kashmiri community in Manchester arranged a reception in honour of Dr Sajad Karim, Conservative Party Member of European Parliament, for getting a honourary Doctorate Degree from University of Management and Technology (UMT) Lahore for his efforts to get Pakistan Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Plus Status. The function was attended by community leaders country-wide.

The Doctorate Degree was awarded to Dr Sajad Karim for his efforts to get Pakistan the GSP Plus status through which Pakistan products would be exports to 27 European Countries without any duty, which would earn Pakistan more than five billion dollars and a big boost to country’s economy.

Pakistani community in Britain and Europe praised the efforts to Dr Sajad Karim and also UMT for awarding degree to Sajad Karim. The community leaders in the function expressed complete solidarity with Dr Sajad Karim and assured him full support in upcoming elections saying that like previous two elections they would vote for him.

Dr Sajad Karim said Pakistani community had a great role in British development, but some elements are trying to malign this role. “The element which is busy to malign Pakistani community’s image are not aware the impact of this, as it would have band impact on socio economic fabric”, he added.

He called upon community leaders to work hard to bring unity in community so that it can flourish.

He praised the role of Andrew Stephenson, MP and Chairman All Parties Friends of Pakistan in British Parliament saying “without support and assistance from Andrew all what I did was not possible. We all have understanding from last more than a decade”.

He said the Doctorate Degree decorated on him is pride of people of North West, who have time and again reposed their confidence on him and make him able to do something for Pakistan.

Sajad Karim said in spite of getting GSP Plus status Pakistani Government is not doing much to make cordial relations with European Union. “The struggle we did during last 8 years was not praised by elected representatives of Pakistan while many politicians are thinking it was an impossible task”.

He said the first British Parliamentarian Chaudhry Sarwar after becoming Governor Punjab highlighted this issue in Pakistan and he gained the confidence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif besides he encouraged me, which helped in making it a success and Pakistan is able to export its products to Eropean Union, besides Pakistan Friendship groups were formed in different European countries, which are being run by governments of these countries or business community.

Now the time had come when Pakistan should make its relationship with Europe conducive, he urged.

Wajid Shamsul Hassan, Pakistan High Commissioner to Britain in huge clapping from audience praised the efforts of Sajad Karim for GSP Plus saying that this status for Pakistan became possible only due to hectic efforts of Sajad Karim.

He felicitated people of North West and Sajad Karim for getting doctoreate degree saying you deserve that efforts be praised loudly. Today we are marking this day when it is martyrdom annivrsary of Benazir Bhutto who was like younger sister for me and she was responsible for putting Pakistan on the path of development, he said.

It is need of the hour that Pakistan should strengthen its relationship with Europe and points which raised by Sajad Karim be addressed, he said, adding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is making efforts to bail out country from the current status and for this purpose he has taken some solid steps.

Wajid Shamsul Hassan lauded the role of Pakistani Community in development of Britain and its love and affection for Pakistan saying Britain is a country where everyone has equal rights and equal opportunities to grow, while Pakistani community availed these opportunities to make Pakistan strong and stable.

Andrew Stephenson MP also praised Sajad Karim for getting Doctorate saying this is pride not only for Sajad Karim but entire Pakistani community of North West.

The function was started by recitation of Holy Quran by Zia Chaudhry, while son and daughter of Sajad Karim also addressed the gathering. Counsel General of Pakistan Manchester Dr Zahoor Ahmed, Community Welfare Attache Sajid Qazi, Councillors and Community leaders participated in the gathering.
