LAHORE: Getting Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Plus from European Union is a big achievement which will go a long way to strengthen Pakistan’s economy, rise in export of textile and garment products and create new job opportunities for the young generation, said Chief Minister of Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif
All out measures are being taken to get full benefit from the GSP Plus status and the Punjab government has constituted a special cabinet committee in this regard which will soon present its final recommendations, Shahbaz Sharif said while talking to a delegation led by Dr Sajad Karim, Member of European Parliament. The prospects of Pakistan’s access to the markets of 28 European countries and increase in its exports in the wake of GSP Plus status were discussed on the occasion.
Dr Sajad Karim, being Chairman Friends of Pakistan Group in European Parliament has a big role in getting GSP Plus status for Pakistan.
Shahbaz Sharif said besides enhancing industrial production, increase in exports is also necessary for economic development of the country and for enhancing speed of industry. Granting of GSP Plus status to Pakistan by European Union will result in increase in the export of Pakistani products especially textile and garments to European market.
He said Dr Sajad Karim and other Overseas Pakistanis living in Europe have played a key role in the awarding of GSP Plus status to Pakistan. Government will fully benefit from this golden opportunity and all conventions will be fully observed in accordance with European Union standards so that maximum Pakistani products could have access to European markets, he said.
The Government is acting speedily to meet the demands of GSP Plus status and a special cabinet committee has also been formed for this purpose, Shahbaz Sharif said, adding the increase in textile and garment exports will enhance the volume of trade with European countries while industrial sector will also progress resulting in strengthening of economy.
Dr Sajad Karim while speaking on the occasion said awarding of GSP Plus status by European Union had provided a golden opportunity to Pakistan to increase its exports.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had played a commendable role on diplomatic front for obtaining GSP Plus status due to which Pakistan had achieved a historic success, Sajad Karim added.
