Government clear on National Security: Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Government is crystal clear on the National Security Policy and it was moving forward with a clear thought and believing a transparent process of dialogue with the Taliban, said Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

There is no confusion in the government policy against extremism and terrorism, and if anybody thinks it needs more clarity, it would welcome the suggestions and recommendations, the prime minister said in his address in National Assembly following the announcement of the National Security Policy by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

“We are clear over it and will use all out efforts to remove confusion if the opposition thinks it exists. We are ready for a heart to heart discussion, seek opinion and bring about an improvement,” Nawaz Sharif said.

He praised the efforts of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar over his hard work with all sincerity to prepare the security policy. “The interior minister and his ministry worked hard to accomplish the task,” Nawaz Sharif said.

The interior minister had already said that the security policy was not the last word and could be improved further in light of the recommendations of the House, Mian Nawaz Sharif said, adding it is a state policy and of the nation. It is not the policy of the government or the PML-N and everybody should give its input.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the house the process of dialogue with the Taliban had been clear and transparent and head of the government committee Irfan Siddiqui also kept on briefing the media about the progress. It was the beauty of democracy that everybody speaks on national issues with clarity of thought and with facts, he added.

Nawaz Sharif said the democracy is the only solution to problems facing the nation and urged to stand united for a secure and bright future, adding that the government will take the opposition and parliamentary leaders of political parties into confidence over the dialogue with the Taliban.

He said he has learnt a lot from mistakes of the past and now it is time to mend the follies. Let us talk with responsibility and commitment. They had waged a joint struggle for restoration of democracy and judiciary.

The prime minister welcomed the comments of the Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah saying he knew that Khursheed Shah had spoken from his heart.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar tabled a wide-ranging National Security Policy, which mainly deals with internal security of the country and envisages activation and revival of the National Counter-Terrorism Authority (Nacta), creation of a Rapid Response Force and establishment of an Internal Security Division and an Intelligence Division in the Interior Ministry.

Giving the salient features of the security policy, the interior minister said it was a 100-page document which had been finalized in a period of five months. “It is a wide-ranging security policy and each of its aspects, including economic security and curbing terrorism, needs to be focused,” he elaborated.

The minister said the policy would have three dimensions, including Secret, Strategic and Operational. He said the first dimension dealt with day-to-day affairs and should be kept secret.
