Sir Gerald Kaufman was a true friend of Pakistan: Syed Ibne Abbas

London: Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK paid rich tributes to Sir Gerald Kaufman MP who passed away last month. Speaking at a Memorial Tribute in Honour of Sir Gerald Kaufman MP at the House of House of Lords, the High Commissioner termed him a true friend of Pakistan as well as the voice of the voiceless and vulnerable segments of humanity.

The High Commissioner said: “Sir Gerald Kaufman MP was a veteran British parliamentarian, a wise man, and a great human being, who will be missed by all who knew him; a larger than life and iconic figure who set high standards in politics and always stood for rightful causes and for the rights of the oppressed people.

“He was a true friend of Pakistan, in recognition of which, he was conferred prestigious civil award of the country Hilal-e-Pakistan by the Government.”

The Memorial was attended by several Lords, MPs and members of the Pakistani community. All paid glowing tributes to Sir Gerald Kaufman as a great parliamentarian and great human being.

The distinguished Parliamentarians who attended were the Speaker of the UK Parliament Rt. Hon. John Bercow MP, Lord Peter Hain, Lord Morris, Lord Robertson, Lord Anderson, Baroness Virginia Bottomley, Baroness Liddell, the Shadow Foreign Secretary of State Rt. Hon. Emily Thornberry MP, Rehman Chishty MP and Yasmin Quershi MP. The Pakistan High Commissioner was welcomed to the House of Lords UK Parliament by Lord Qurban Hussain. Rich tributes were paid by the distinguished Lords, Baronesses and MP’s.

The occasion was also used to applaud the outstanding service of the Pakistan High Commissioner HE Syed Ibne Abbas, who was presented the Gerald Kaufman Award for service to international community cohesion.

Shazada Hayat President UICF (UK) who organised the event said, “Sir Gerald Kaufman served not only the British but the international community. Sir Gerald put compassion at the forefront before any personal religious or political interest, which made him stand out. The true testimony of how wonderful Sir Gerald Kaufman was can be seen in this great Parliament today where the Christian, Jews, Hindu’s and Muslims have joined together to honour and pay their respect to a Jewish great gentleman, who has won the hearts and minds of the international community for his life time dedication to justice, fairness and international community cohesion.”
