British Muslim Friends of Labour discussed Islamophobia
London: Islamophobia was caused by violent movements and bombings in London, Madrid, Paris, Brussels and elsewhere.
Monitoring groups and campaigners point out that hate crime is often under-reported, with Muslims in particular reluctant to contact the police for fear that they won’t be taken seriously. Some campaigners point out confidence in the police may also be low in the wake of counter-terrorism strategies such as Prevent. And they say harassment that is not violent, such as verbal abuse or spitting, can still spread fear and make communities feel under siege.
These were the findings in a meeting at the House of Lords to discuss Anti Semitism, Islamophobia and other hate related issues within the Labour Party.
The meeting was arranged by Chairman British Muslim Friends of Labour Shokat Ali.
The enquiry is setup by Jeremy Corbyn and Led by Shami Chakrabarti and Baroness Royall. Present at the meeting was Community Safety & Engagement Cabinet Member Cllr Liaquat Ali, Khalid Mahmood MP, Metropolitan Police Commander Mak Chishty, Cllr Faizullah Khan, Shahzada Hayat, Author and Community activist Hibo Wardere, Mauritius Disability Link Cader Hossenally, Director Shakir Youth Trust Agha Marzooq, Imam of Cricklewood Mosque and Professor David.
