A Lawyer-Imam awarded Yorkshire Professional of the Year
Bradford: Leeds Muslim Council organized a reception in honour of their Imam, Qari Asim MBE, Qari Asim has been named Professional of the Year at the Yorkshire Asian Business Association Awards.
Qari Asim is a senior Associate at the global law firm, DLA Piper but he is unique in the sense that he is also an Imam at the award winning Makkah Masjid (mosque), where he leads daily prayers and leads his community.
A representative of Leeds Makkah Mosque, Haji Arif, said, “Imam Qari Asim’s award is a cause of celebration for us all because it signifies and recognises the wonderful work that Qari Asim has being doing to enhance communal relations, and bridge gap between communities, and the corporate and spiritual world.”
Qari, who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2012, is an influential community leader in Yorkshire, combining his roles as a solicitor and an Imam, placing him in a unique position to assist and influence communities on a business and spiritual level.
As one of only a small number of lawyers outside London who specialises in Islamic Finance law and real estate, Qari’s skillset allows DLA Piper to offer its regional clients seamless advice in specialist areas of law normally only offered by the London offices of city firms.
Imam Qari Asim said, “I am incredibly humbled and immensely honoured by the Professional of the Year award. I am deeply indebted to my family and colleagues, all of whom have played an important part in enabling me to serve the communities in Yorkshire.”
Qari has been recognised for the work he does to promote Yorkshire as a great place to do business and he works closely with the business community and politicians to advocate the approach that the region speaks up with one voice and one vision.
Commenting on the award, Sarah Day, Managing Partner of DLA Piper Leeds office, said: ” This is a hugely well-deserved award for Qari and on behalf of Leeds office I would like to congratulate Qari on this recognition.”
A young member of the Mosque’s congregation, Shazia Mahmod, commented, “We are delighted that Imam Asim has received this prestigious award and we are immensely proud to have him as our leader.”
Qari holds a number of board and trustee roles outside of DLA Piper and contributes significantly to the charitable, educational, spiritual and business aspects of the region.
